Dr Huey Wen Lim, McKenzie Postdoctoral Research Fellow within the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, has been awarded the CIB Keith Hampson ECR-Industry award 2023 for her research proposal on how work practices in prefabrication construction influence the well-being of the construction workforce.

The construction industry, as one of the largest employers globally, presents a high prevalence of mental health issues and suicide.

While research has revealed that mental health issues can arise from stress related to onsite construction work, current studies have focused primarily on stressors without identifying harmful work practices perpetuating mental health issues.

“This award will be instrumental in propelling my research endeavours forward, particularly in exploring innovative construction practices and strategies that prioritise the mental well-being of the construction workforce,” Dr Lim said.

Through this award, Dr Lim will be able to explore the ways in which adoption of technologies and innovative construction methods, particularly prefabrication, could enhance the well-being of the construction workforce.

“Through the CIB platform, I am optimistic that the research findings will have a far-reaching impact within both industry and academia, ultimately contributing to a safer, healthier and more sustainable future for the construction industry,” Dr Lim said.

The annual CIB Keith Hampson ECR-Industry award provides early career researchers an opportunity to develop and foster industry connections, while putting forward innovative ideas for the development of improved engagement between the two sectors.
