Dr Peter Sweatman, Enterprise Professor in Transport Technologies in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, has been awarded the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award was presented at the 28th ITS World Congress in Los Angeles on September 19, 2022, in recognition of Dr Sweatman’s outstanding contributions as a leader in the ITS field. The globally-recognised award celebrates the achievements of leaders in the transport industry.

"I'm grateful to the University of Melbourne AIMES program and ITS Australia for enabling me to continue my research achievements at the University of Michigan, Mcity and ITS America," Dr Sweatman said.

"Our ability to tackle highly complex problems like connected and automated vehicles depends on global collaboration and competition. That's where the ITS World Congress plays such an important role."

Dr Sweatman has over 30 years of experience in transportation research and innovation. He has worked extensively in ITS in the USA, the Asia-Pacific region and Europe, and is a past chairman of the board of ITS America, and served as founding chair of the ITS America Leadership Circle.

In 2020, Dr Sweatman returned to Australia from the USA, joining the University of Melbourne as an Enterprise Professor and senior advisor in AIMES (Australian Integrated Multimodal EcoSystem) – a world-first multimodal testing ecosystem, which covers over 100 km of local and arterial roads and freeways.

Dr Sweatman initiated the Michigan Australia Exchange (MAX), an advanced mobility collaboration between the State of Michigan and the Australian Department of Infrastructure, and was awarded ITS Australia's highest honour, the ITS Australia Max Lay Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
