The University of Melbourne’s Research Outputs team has been awarded the 2022 Paul Taylor Award for Excellence in Research Management Practice.

The Research Outputs team was established in 2021 as an integrated shared service responsible for collecting and processing the University’s research outputs.

This material is relied upon for evaluations, profiles, rankings and government reporting, and was previously handled by a dispersed workforce of more than 100 people.

The new team focused on automating the classification of research outputs, standardising the collection of outputs across the University, standardising and integrating the use of third-party identifiers, and reducing data validation burdens on academic staff, all with the goal of working smarter and more efficiently.

The team sits within Student and Scholarly Services and includes Samuel Rowland, Janelle Christie, Amin Khaliqi, Alison Timms, Sally Tape, Jen Ri, Sarah Kirby, Sonia Sharma, Helen Harrison and Jacqui Randall.

Research Outputs Coordinator Samuel Rowland said the team had strived to achieve best practice.

“Since its beginnings, the Research Outputs team have aspired to match the professionalism and quality of the University of Melbourne’s outstanding research and establish the University as a national exemplar for research outputs management,” Mr Rowland said.

“For the team, who have worked collaboratively, respectfully, and very hard to achieve this, this award is recognition that these aspirations have been realised.”

The Paul Taylor Award for Excellence in Research Management Practice honours Dr Paul Taylor, a highly regarded and inspiring management professional, well known for his determined leadership on the conduct of research, who passed away in November 2018.
