The Western Edge Biosciences (WEBS) program involves the construction of a world-class precinct for teaching, research, and training. This program seeks to improve research performance and enrich learning experiences, helping to train the next generation of bioscientists, vets, and doctors. The program is distinctive as it meets the requirements for the global accreditation of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program in 2020, safeguarding the only accredited veterinary course in Victoria.
The Western Edge Biosciences Stage 1 project will, for the first time, bring together the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Science into one cohesive precinct.
This world-class building will provide an active and flexible learning environment that has been designed specifically to suit the biosciences. Housing purpose-built wet and dry teaching labs, and various formal and informal learning spaces, the building allows for several classes to run simultaneously within the same area.
The corner of Tin Alley and Royal Parade will be revitalised by the new precinct for future bio scientists, vets and doctors. The precinct has been architecturally designed to reflect the theme of biosciences throughout.
With a rich façade and a welcoming natured-based design, the design aims to blend the interior and exterior spaces. The impressive landscape design references the University’s historical System Garden, which will be visible from the informal areas inside.
The WEBS Parkville program has been undertaken in close collaboration with the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science and the Faculty of Science, including user groups with representatives from each faculty.
Our Campus in the 21st Century
Our Campus in the 21st century (OC21) was developed by the University community in a series of workshops that explored the qualities wanted across all campuses and precincts. It is the formal response to the University of Melbourne’s strategic plan Growing Esteem and is integral to how the University will plan for the future, and to developing high-quality campus-based experiences for diverse communities.

and only relates to certain past projects.
Bringing world class facilities including teaching and learning laboratories; the Parkville campus will be transformed by WEBS. It will facilitate better teaching and research through the use of new technology. The project gives the University the opportunity to celebrate the historic elements of the campus particularly the System Garden – which was originally conceived for the teaching of bioscience over 160 years ago.
The design of WEBS Stage 1 is designed to be harmoniously composed into the surrounds of the garden, and its footprint references the garden’s original circular shape. The project will see a new, protected entrance into the garden from Tin Alley side, providing enhanced access for the public. The building will incorporate both a terrace garden and interior plantings, speaking to the history of the site and its present.
WEBS brings together three faculties, Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science and the Faculty of Science with the aim of increasing collaboration in the biosciences, while working within world class facilities.
The biological sciences will play a significant role in solving the global challenges of health and food security which include: improving the quality and length of life, better stewardship of essential natural resources, water, energy and global ecosystems and increased productivity of crops, livestock, other foods and natural fibres.
The Western Edge will substantially improve student experience and educational outcomes across the biosciences. Students will enjoy state of the art facilities which are highly shareable; world-class teaching spaces, including ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ practical classrooms will facilitate the benefits of a cross-disciplinary approach to the biosciences, and enable the delivery of a quality curriculum.
