WEBS Werribee

Melbourne Veterinary School Learning and Teaching Building Exterior

The Western Edge Biosciences (WEBS) program involves the construction of a world-class precinct for teaching, research, and training. This program seeks to improve research performance and enrich learning experiences, helping to train the next generation of bioscientists, vets, and doctors. The program is distinctive as it meets the requirements for the global accreditation of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program in 2020, safeguarding the only accredited veterinary course in Victoria.

The University of Melbourne’s Werribee campus will be redeveloped to create a state-of-the-art facility for our clients, students, staff and wider community.

A new five-storey learning and teaching building will improve the delivery of the University’s world-class veterinary education. Housing cutting edge equipment, and purpose-built spaces, including sitting areas open to the public and a new cafĂ©.

Part of the redevelopment also includes the upgrade to the U-Vet Animal Hospital, which provides world-class treatments for pets as well as the best possible hands-on clinical experience for students.

A new emergency area, separate waiting areas for different species and additional consultation rooms are just some of the additional new features. There will also be new landscaped gardens with improved pedestrian access and an upgraded car park.

Throughout the construction, U-Vet will continue to operate 24-hours and to provide the same high-quality medical care for animals. Learning, teaching and research activities will also continue. Any changes will be clearly signed and alternative parking will be provided.

The Werribee Redevelopment has been designed in consultation with veterinarians with expertise in animal behaviour. The project aligns with the aspirations of the University and the Victorian Planning Authority and Wyndham City Council.

Our Campus in the 21st Century

Our Campus in the 21st century (OC21) was developed by the University community in a series of workshops that explored the qualities wanted across all campuses and precincts. It is the formal response to the University of Melbourne’s strategic plan Growing Esteem and is integral to how the University will plan for the future, and to developing high-quality campus-based experiences for diverse communities.

Please note that the OC21 Framework has been superseded
and only relates to certain past projects.

WEBS brings together three faculties, Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science and the Faculty of Science with the aim of increasing collaboration in the biosciences, while working within world class facilities. The biological sciences will play a significant role in solving the global challenges of health and food security which include: improving the quality and length of life, better stewardship of essential natural resources, water, energy and global ecosystems and increased productivity of crops, livestock, other foods and natural fibres.

The Western Edge will substantially improve student experience and educational outcomes across the biosciences. Students will enjoy state of the art facilities which are highly shareable; world-class teaching spaces, including ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ practical classrooms will facilitate the benefits of a cross-disciplinary approach to the biosciences, and enable the delivery of a quality curriculum.
