LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Action Plan
The University’s LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Action Plan is the result of a consultation process bringing together the lived experience of staff and students, expertise from across the University community, and benchmarking against leading practice.
The plan represents the first coordinated whole-of-University approach to eliminate obstacles in culture, practices, systems and structures for LGBTIQA+ inclusion. The aim is to embed and advance principles of diversity and inclusion by addressing the unique challenges facing LGBTIQA+ students, staff and visitors to the University.
The University has committed to resource and implement the actions outlined in the plan. All staff and students are encouraged to engage with the programs, services, resources and events it will deliver.

Gender affirmation at the University
The University has a Gender Affirmation Policy to support equity and inclusion for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) students and staff. All continuing, fixed-term and casual staff are entitled to access Gender Affirmation Leave.
The Safer Community Program offers specialist support to the University’s TGD community. This support extends to information and guidance around gender affirmation at the University, facilitating connections with appropriate services and agencies, and providing TGD resources for students and staff.
Days of significance
Each year, the University celebrates LGBTIQA+ days of significance to re-affirm its commitment to support the safety, inclusion and success of LGBTIQA+ students and staff. We encourage all members of the University community to join in celebrating these days:
- Midsumma Pride March: Each February, University of Melbourne students, staff and alumni walk together to celebrate Midsumma Pride.
- Transgender Day of Visibility: 31 March is International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDoV), a day to celebrate the trans and gender diverse community and raise awareness of the ongoing barriers to inclusion.
- IDAHOBIT: 17 May is the International Day Against LGBTIQA+ Discrimination.
