Engineering Precinct

Engineering workshop

The Melbourne School of Engineering (MSE) is investing $450 million as part of its vision towards 2025 to develop entrepreneurs, experts and technologies to transform the future. The MSE is partaking in three major initiatives, the refurbishment of the existing Engineering Precinct in Parkville, the building of a new engineering campus in Fishermans Bend and collaboration with Melbourne Connect.

New student spaces

The north wing of the Old Engineering building has been converted into a contemporary and informal student space. Students now have dedicated places that enable them to work individually or as a group, supported by digital technology students can engage and collaborate with peers and industry partners.

Research space for human movement

To advance biomechanical and biomedical research, the MSE have installed the only Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN) in Australia into the Engineering Workshops. This technology will be used for a variety of applications including to conduct research such as in rehabilitation, test patient groups and explore specialised fields.

Pedestrian linkway

A pedestrian linkway through the Engineering Workshops will connect to the New Student Precinct and Melbourne Connect initiative once the projects are completed.

Upgraded Melbourne University racing garage

The upgraded Melbourne University Racing (MUR) garage will house a diverse cohort of students who partake in a 12 month design cycle to assemble a combustion and electric race vehicle from scratch. Each year, approximately 45 senior engineering students work with and mentor 50 junior engineering students to equip them with the skills to lead in future years.

Space Lab

Creating flexible and collaborative spaces by testing a range of workspace options for staff and students in the Space Lab on level 3 of Block D (building 176). Different teams and configurations are tested within the spaces and the data collected is used to inform the design of future workspaces to facilitate engagement, collaboration and innovation.

Restoring the western façade of Old Engineering building

The façade has been restored to preserve the history of the Old Engineering building which has been the home of Engineering at the University since 1901.

Demolishing Old Radiation building

The Old Radiation building has a long history and was the physical grounds for medical research. In recent years, the structure has fallen into disrepair as a result the building has been demolished and the remaining space will be used as a connection to the New Student Precinct.

Our Campus in the 21st Century

Our Campus in the 21st century (OC21) was developed by the University community in a series of workshops that explored the qualities wanted across all campuses and precincts. It is the formal response to the University of Melbourne’s strategic plan Growing Esteem and is integral to how the University will plan for the future, and to developing high-quality campus-based experiences for diverse communities.

Please note that the OC21 Framework has been superseded
and only relates to certain past projects.
